Chapter 42 Destined Lover
Calvin was bewildered as to why Jocelyn was keeping her past from him.
He got the impression that she had been through a lot those years. The less she told him, the more he was intrigued by her and wanted to learn more about her.
"What's she doing now?" Calvin asked, rubbing his chin.
Before Craig could respond, however, Marcus interrupted with a phone call.
After answering the phone, Craig covered the receiver and said to Calvin, "It's Marcus calling. He told me that Miss Austin wants to see you right now. She probably wants to talk to you about the copyright auction. Would you mind letting her know you're going to Mermaidshine tonight?"
"Sure."
"Please tell Miss Austin that Mr. Austin will be at Mermaidshine tonight," Craig said to Marcus.
Jocelyn was delighted when she learned Calvin would be attending Mermaidshine that night. She then told Marcus, "Why don't you send me there right now if he's also going to be there? I need to see him as soon as possible and talk to him in person!"
Jocelyn had everything planned: she would use Calvin to her advantage because she had married him. After all, he was a big shot in the first place.
It would be fantastic, she thought, if she could persuade Calvin to buy the rights to The Phoenix Queen. In addition, if the rights and the original creator were merged into one, it would be a lucrative business opportunity for Calvin.
Instead of letting Ernest take advantage of the situation, Jocelyn would rather have Calvin work for this money.
Marcus had the car ready soon. While he was getting ready to leave, she asked him to wait so she could change into her evening attire.
After all, she was Calvin's wife, so she decided to get dressed up before going to Mermaidshine to see him in case she embarrassed him. Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
When Jocelyn arrived at the Mermaidshine building, the auction had not yet begun. There was a reception in Hall 2 where everyone who was waiting for the auction could mingle.
Everyone had gone out of their way to look their best for the occasion.
While Jocelyn began searching for Calvin in the crowd, she instructed Marcus to do the same.
However, before she found Calvin, Jocelyn noticed Ernest in the crowd.
Ernest was dressed formally in a black suit. He was drinking wine and chatting with wealthy businessmen, but he kept looking around the room for Jocelyn.
He had a feeling Jocelyn would be there.
Jocelyn turned around and ran back just as Ernest was about to spot her.
However, she accidentally bumped into a man. "I'm sorry!" she said.
"Jocelyn!"
Jocelyn looked up when she heard a familiar voice and was surprised to see it was Todd.
The previous two days had passed without either of them seeing or talking with the other.
He appeared depressed and weathered. His once crystal-clear amber eyes had become cloudy and opaque as if frost had formed on them.
Tears welled up in Todd's eyes as he stared longingly at the woman he had missed so much.
He appeared to be overwhelmed with a wide range of conflicting emotions.
Nobody knew how much Jocelyn meant to him.
Todd and Jocelyn were close as children because their grandfathers were friends. They spent a lot of time together at school and in the neighborhood since they were young children. He was willing to be Jocelyn's best friend because he was very into her.
He had a crush on her for a long time, but she eventually chose to date Ernest, who she broke up with before she moved out of the country.
Todd had to keep his hopes up for a long time for her to finally come back. His heart broke when, upon her return, she quickly married his cousin without telling him.
Two days of reflection left Todd still struggling to forget about her. He adored her and wished to marry her, but his top priority was to make her happy.
Todd had no problem letting her go and blessing her if Calvin was the only one who could make her happy.
"Todd, I..." Jocelyn was heartbroken when she saw Todd's sadness.
"You don't have to cheer me up, Jocelyn. I've figured it out. Nothing makes me happier than to see you happy, so please know how much I hope you find it."
Jocelyn immediately had tears in her eyes. Todd stood by her side, whispering in a voice no one else could hear, "It's not a big deal. You don't have to be worried about me, and you don't have to feel sorry for me. I will continue to support, protect, and love you as I always have no matter who you end up with. I will always be your closest friend."
The way Todd expressed his feelings for Jocelyn moved her deeply. She suppressed her sobs and fixed her gaze on him.
Deep down, she knew she could never repay Todd for his genuine feelings, so she prayed to God to grant him a perfect life.
They stared at each other silently, but many people soon approached them and greeted Todd.
"Hello, Mr. Garner!"
"It's been a while, Mr. Garner."
"Who is this lovely young lady, Mr. Garner?"
Everyone focused their attention on the stunning woman standing next to Todd.
Todd didn't want to show his true feelings in front of everyone because he wanted his love to remain a secret. "This is my friend Jocelyn Murray," he said, introducing her to everyone.
Deep in his mind, Todd considered his "friend" Jocelyn to be his wife, the one he thought was destined to spend the rest of his life with.
A real estate investor asked in surprise, "Is that you, Jocelyn Murray? Isn't it you the actress who won the Bomia Award for Best Actress five years ago and then left show business? Gee! I never expected to see you again after five years. I must say, Miss Murray, you've only gotten more stunning with age."
Jocelyn's appearance and temperament had changed dramatically over the previous five years. They may not remember her face, but they do recall her name.
The man reached out his hand to shake Jocelyn's, but Todd stopped him.
Todd made up his mind that he would shadow Jocelyn wherever she went tonight.
Todd helped Jocelyn network by introducing her to influential business people. However, she always had the distinct impression that someone was staring at her.
When she looked up, she locked eyes with Ernest.
He seemed like he wished he could kill her with his mean glance.
Jocelyn was dressed in a long, white dress with a ruffled neck. The light reflecting off the tiny diamonds on the hem of her gown created the illusion of a galaxy gently flowing over her, making her look like a goddess.
The dress Calvin had purchased for her fit her so perfectly that it seemed custom-made. She looked stunning in it, as it accentuated her slim, elegant form.
She had a flawless body.
Jocelyn was dazzling and eye-catching, making it difficult for her to go unnoticed.
Ernest smiled after he saw Jocelyn. He thought to himself, "Ah, there she is! It seems that my plan is working."
