Chapter 2222
"Isn't that your employee's job?"
I placed a grape into my mouth and chewed it as I said this..
"You're such a workaholic. You do everything by yourself, twenty-four hours a day isn't enough for you. As Freya said, money makes money. There is no end to earning money. With our current assets, we won't have to worry about food and clothing, we can simply rely on our dividends."
"Don't forget, you said you'd stay by my side for the rest of our lives. You told me you'd take care of me and protect me. If this continues, you'll be gone long before me."
That would be much too cruel.
I suddenly remembered a summer from my childhood. My grandmother would hold me in her arms in the garden every night. She would tell the same story about Mr. Edward and about a woman who was their neighbor over and over again.
That woman was Madam Petty. She and Mr. Edward had been betrothed to each other ever since they were young. They hadn't met before they got married. When the time came, they held their wedding. After their marriage, they quarreled a lot. Mr. Edward had always complained about Madam Petty's figure, saying that she was too fat for him while she would say that he was very arrogant and didn't care about his family. They would go on and on every day. Every time, he would gain the upper hand in their arguments. But when she was gone, he soon fell ill and left shortly after her.
Grandma would say, "Back then, everyone believed that men were the pillars of their families. But Mr. Edward's death gave everyone a wake-up call. We live in a very big world. Even if men are more capable than women, women still play an essential role in a family. This was why Madam Petty's death brought the collapse of their family. Mr. Edward couldn't hold on all by himself and followed suit."
I was still young then and didn't understand what this meant. All I knew was that people would leave when they've reached old age, some just left earlier than others. But eventually, everyone would have to meet their maker.
But now, after becoming a wife myself, I finally understood the relationship between a husband and wife. Marriage was what tied them together as a unit. If something happened to either of them, the other would suffer too.Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.
Hendrix had changed a lot in the past few years, but no one could stop him from being stubborn. Even if I told him about it directly, he.. would find an excuse to justify¶t. I could only use roundabout ways to remind him about his behaviour.
I had intended to tell him that I wanted him to be with me until the very end.
Even though I was certain that the future would be much calmer than the first half of my life, and that it might pass in the blink of an eye, every time Hendrix held back from me, I'd end up thinking that I'd have to spend the rest of my life alone. At the thought of this, I felt that no matter how peaceful my days were, they would still be dark times.
In these unforgettable days, we loved each other passionately. When all of our troubles had passed, my greatest wish was to be able to spend the rest of our days together, hand-in-hand.
It was rare for Hendrix to not tease me. He then got straight to the point. "It was a mistake with Monique. Do you think Anne can overcome this?"
He had always been confident about Anne. When he suddenly asked me this, I couldn't react for a moment. "Did Tobias send you any messages?" Hendrix shook his head blankly, "No."
He crossed his legs and placed his hands on his lap. He looked dignified and immersed in his own thoughts "I'm just discussing this possibility with you. After all, after paying our respects to Monique, Anne never came back."
