Chapter 198
At that moment, Joy realized she'd let slip something she shouldn't have, her face going pale with fear as she quickly clammed up.
Selena had caught every word, loud and clear. She spoke with measured clarity, "Joy, spill everything you know!"
Joy's face was a mix of panic and reluctance as she tried to backtrack, "Selena, I was just talking nonsense and was caught up in the moment. Don't take it..."
Selena cut her off, "If you still see me as your friend, then be honest with me."
With that, Joy knew she couldn't keep it under wraps any longer. Biting her lower lip, she softly confessed, "When I had someone look into Jimmy, I found out he and Wendy had been in contact. I wanted to dig deeper, but... but..." She faltered, the words refusing to come. "Everett warned you off, right? He didn't want you poking around," Selena finished the sentence for her.
"Wendy and I have no beef, so there's no reason she'd risk so much unless she were working for Margot. So, just like we thought, Margot had a hand in this too!" Selena's deduction hit the mark, leaving Joy silent.
Selena pressed on, "If we figured it out, Everett surely did too. He's covering for his true love, and that's why he shut down your investigation. This way, he only needed to handle Jimmy to give me an explanation, all while treating me like a fool!"
"Selena... I'm sorry." Joy embraced Selena, whispering her apology, "I didn't mean to hide it from you. I just thought Everett had turned a corner, that he saw the good in you and wanted to make things right."
"I saw how much you cared for Everett, and I just couldn't bring myself to say it."
Selena didn't hold it against Joy. Joy had her own struggles. Her family had relied on the Bennett family for years, so she had to pay attention to Everett's whims. Plus, she really did hope that Selena and Everett would have a happy ending.
After offering Joy a few comforting words, Selena stood up and left.

In the CEO's office, the instant Margot wrapped her arms around Everett, his brow furrowed, a chill flashing in his eyes as he pushed her away without a second thought. She stumbled back a few steps before regaining her balance.
Everett turned, his dark eyes piercing her with intensity and displeasure. Even in silence, his presence was daunting.
Margot, initially feeling a bit wounded, now felt a pang of anxiety as she stammered out, "Everett, I just saw you and couldn't help myself. I forgot you don't like being touched. It won't happen again..."
Her head bowed, and her hands nervously played with her dress. She looked the picture of vulnerability.
Perhaps something in her words softened Everett's expression. He moved back behind his desk, sitting down with a neutral tone. "Why are you here?"
His indifference stung Margot. She
hadn't seen him since the last party
and missed him terribly. The coldness in his eyes made her curb her longing, as she slowly spoke, "Everett, I'm here to ask you to spare Wendy."
