Chapter 89
Chapter 89
Ethan was standing a few yards behind her, watching everything unfold.
Apollo raised his head and saw Alice, and his eyes shone. Just when he was about to dart to his mother, his face fell. At the same time that he saw his mother, he saw the man standing behind her. He had never seen the man before, but one look was enough to tell him this was no ordinary person.
He whipped his phone out and texted his mother in a flash. ‘You’re followed.’ Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.
Alice was holding her phone, and the notification prompted her to take a look. She then saw the message.
Another text came in. ‘Left side. Forty-five degrees.’
Alice was shocked. I’m followed? By whom? The Yeagers? Elijah’s men? Her first instinct was not to turn around. Instead, she turned on selfie mode and pointed her phone in the direction her son spoke of, and she checked out who the stalker was.
Elijah had sent assassins after her on more than one occasion over the last seven years, so she picked up some tricks to defend against them. This was one of the basic ones. Once she set the phone at a determined angle, she noticed the man who was following her.
When she saw who it was, she froze. Ethan? Why is he here? Oh, so he’s the one following me? But why?
He only married her because of Caroline, and he made her sign a contract that would prompt them into divorce six months down the line. They were, at best, housemates at the moment. I thought we should stay out of each other’s business, so why did he follow me?
She had been only taking care of Caroline these last few days. There shouldn’t have been anything that could provoke suspicion. Moreover, she never felt anyone keeping an eye on her. He probably
doesn’t know I am going to come here, and he’s too arrogant to stoop so low as to stalk.
All of a sudden, she was reminded of something. Two days ago, when she woke up, she noticed a text from him. He said he was on a business trip and would only come back after two days. Which makes it today. This is probably a coincidence. He disembarked right after I arrived and probably followed me when he noticed me.
Alice thought that was the most probable explanation. So, everything’s a coincidence. He saw me by chance and followed me. However, she was here to pick Apollo up. She kept his existence a secret so no one would find out. She didn’t want the rumors to affect him.
Whenever she assumed her role of Alice, she never showed up in the same room as Apollo. The only reason she got sloppy today and skipped out on the disguise was that she was worried. At first, she wanted to disguise Caroline as well, but when she took her in, Caroline was anxious and nervous. Aside from her, she would cry whenever anyone else approached her. Left with no choice, she had to spend most of her time with Caroline, but then Caroline got clingy and had been with Alice ever since.
Most people wouldn’t even be able to find out about Caroline’s case, but Ethan wasn’t most people.
She knew the marriage wouldn’t last long, but Alice was never on guard around Ethan. She didn’t keep a lot of secrets from him. For example, she wouldn’t pretend to be stupid around him. In fact, she was almost lackadaisical about it. If he asked about anything, including things about the Wolands and their company, she would answer him.
However, all bets were off when it came to Apollo. She would not let any harm come to him, not even if there was a non-zero chance. Even if Ethan was her real husband, she would consider it greatly before she would tell him about the boy, let alone that they were just in a fake marriage. She would not expose the boy under these circumstances, especially when she had no idea why Ethan was following her.
She came in too much of a hurry and neglected her disguise. If she met her son just like this, the media would expose him. She noticed a few reporters and paparazzi around, and some were aiming their cameras at her. A hint of fury flared in her eyes. Guess I can’t see my boy now.
Apollo texted again, ‘I’ll grab something to eat in the restaurant. You handle your business. We’ll talk later.’ Apollo considered his mother’s circumstances as well, and he chose to leave. Of course, he was also wary of Ethan too. The boy thought of everything.
Alice heaved a sigh of relief. That’s the best solution for now, but what about Ethan? How should I deal with him? Ethan was a smart and dangerous man. He would not believe anyone’s lies that easily, so she needed a perfect plan to dupe him. At first, she suspected that Ethan was the one who slept with her seven years ago, but after she met Keith a few days ago, she tossed her suspicion aside. Now she thought Ethan was probably not Apollo’s father.
Apollo was her son. Even though she was married to Ethan, she didn’t want the boy to get tangled with the Knights. Lawrence might be a friendly man, but that didn’t mean his whole family was friendly. Rosy alone didn’t like her, and she knew why. That woman thought Alice was beneath her son.
If Apollo was not connected to the Knights in any way, shape, or form, what would Rosy think if she and the Knights found out about the boy’s existence? What if she picked up her son, and the media talked all about it? They might think she was using the boy to take advantage of the Knights. She would never do it, and she would never subject her son to such scrutiny and lies.
