A Successful Career After Divorce

Chapter 236 A Little Bit of Good

Brendon was right beside her, and she felt incredibly at ease, her eyes starting to well up with tears.

“Why are you crying?” Brendon’s gentle voice came from above. “Are you still scared?”

Ranita shook her head lightly and rested it on his chest.

His heartbeat was close and strong.

“I was scared before, but not anymore!” Ranita pursed her lips. After a pause, she asked, “Had you been looking for me all this time?”

“Silly girl, who else would be looking for you if not me?” Brendon looked down at her and noticed that the flesh on her cheeks had disappeared. It hurt him like someone had ripped out his heart.

“From now on, even if we have an argument or something happens between us, promise me that you’ll always answer my calls. Do you know how worried I’ve been about you?” His voice was especially tender as though a warm stream flowed into the depths of Ranita’s heart and healed all of the wounds inside instantly.

This little bit of kindness made Ranita feel completely devoted to him.

“Mmm…” Ranita nodded. “I won’t make you worry again.” After everything that happened recently, Ranita had thought a lot about how their baby needed a complete family. Maybe she should try harder to make things work between them.

“Brendon… there’s something I want to ask…” As soon as the words left her mouth, Ranita started feeling uneasy in her heart. Would he consider staying married? Or would he insist on having the baby aborted? The thought of those possibilities made Ranita hesitate once again…

“What is it?” Brendon saw that she wasn’t speaking up so he pinched gently at her chin with his hand. “What’s troubling you so much? You seem hesitant.”

Ranita closed her eyes and took a deep breath before continuing, “If… if I were …”

“Ring ring!” Brendon’s phone rang suddenly interrupting what she wanted to say next.

He glanced at it quickly before hanging up.

Ranita had an intuition that Shannon must have called.

“What were we talking about just now?” Brendon asked when he realized there was silence from Ranita after answering the call.

Ranita felt like all of sudden her courage vanished after being interrupted by Shannon’s call. She felt too naive asking such questions because they still had Shannon in their lives, and who knew maybe Shannon was also carrying their child inside?

It seemed like choosing between ex-wife and true love didn’t leave any room for someone like herself to make decisions…

“It doesn’t matter,” said Ranita with heavy eyelids turning red, “I’m tired. Can we rest for awhile?”

“Okay, go to sleep!” Brendon patted her back, as if coaxing a child. “Don’t be afraid, I’ll stay by your side.”

The more he said this, the more Ranita felt heartbroken.

Every time he stayed by Shannon’s side, was it like this too?

Just then, there was a knock on the door followed by Shannon’s sweet voice, “Ranita, Brendon, may I come in?”

Both Ranita and Brendon were startled.Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.

Brendon immediately went to open the door. Outside stood Shannon holding a bouquet of fresh daisies with her black eyes sparkling against her fair face. She spoke in a soft voice, “Brendon, I heard you found Ranita. I was so worried about her that I came over right away.”

“Ranita, are you feeling better?” Shannon approached while handing the daisies to Ranita. “You must have been scared after what happened.”

Ranita glanced at the flowers before responding coolly, “I’m fine now. Thank you Miss Murphy.”

“Don’t be so polite! When I heard about what happened to you, I was really worried! Take these few days to rest well and don’t worry about Brendon – let him take care of you!”

Shannon’s words were full of innocence and liveliness but there was also an underlying tone of disdainful pity between each line.
