Chapter 119
Chapter 119
With that thought in mind, Angeline felt her blood run cold out of nervousness.
That was when Jonathan exited the vehicle calmly and greeted, “Greetings, Mr. Golding. I’ve heard plenty about you. You definitely live up to your name.”
Evander approached the car with Floretta as he gazed imposingly at Angeline. “Is he the reason you returned to Summerbank?”
“It’s not what you think.” Pressured by his overbearing aura, Angeline stepped out of the car upon steeling herself, momentarily unsure of how to explain her situation.
“As the most prominent investor of The Journey, shouldn’t I know about your relationship with him?” Evander questioned with slight fury.
His anger wasn’t unjustified. Angeline’s sudden departure did negatively affect the filming, after all.
He bought plane tickets and followed her back without hesitation because he was worried about her safety. Yet, when he came to visit her without even bothering to deposit his luggage at home, all he saw was a scene of her getting intimate with another man.
“I think you’ve misunderstood, Mr. Golding. Angeline has been doing things for you,” Jonathan explained plainly.
Then he grabbed a folder from the back of his car and handed it to Evander. “She knew you spent an entire year fighting for Project Serenity against Hanson, so she asked me to analyze the advantages Hanson possesses.”
Evander’s eyebrows furrowed imperceptibly when he heard that. After he opened the folder and perused the content within, the expression on his face changed drastically.
Jonathan continued his explanation calmly, “In reality, there was no way Hanson could’ve bested you. The only reason he hadn’t given up was that Joseline transferred fifteen percent of the shares to him and had bribed someone to be a spy in Golding Group.”
Evander’s expression was exceptionally frosty as he questioned, “Who leaked this intel to you?” His indifferent voice brought with it a hint of restrained viciousness.
Angeline, who was standing at the side, shuddered slightly in trepidation. The look in her eyes as she stared at Jonathan became complicated.
Golding Group was a powerful company. Hence, they usually kept a pretty tight lid on confidential information.
Therefore, the moment a spy appeared, it would no doubt cause a great stir.
With both his hands in his pockets, Jonathan still behaved as nonchalantly as ever. “I work as a hacker for an IT department, Mr. Golding. Once I managed to infiltrate the spy’s bank account, it was easy for me to investigate who they had been dealing with for the recent year. I must stress that I did this because Angeline asked me to. If someone else had asked me to do the same, I would’ve ignored them.”
In the end, he didn’t forget to exonerate Angeline.
“Is what he said true?” Evander’s icy gaze fell on Angeline.
Angeline was so spooked by him that she shuddered. With no other choice under immense pressure, she went along with Jonathan’s story. “Yeah! Hanson is truly despicable. I’ll do whatever I can to help you defeat him.”
Evander’s frigid stare shifted back to Jonathan before he stuffed the files back into the folder.
“Well, since I’ve handed over the folder, my mission here is complete. I’ll be leaving now.” Jonathan promptly turned around and entered the car as he waved goodbye to them.
After he left, Angeline was forced to face Evander alone.
She didn’t have the nerve to raise her head and look at his frosty mug. Instead, she bent down and patted the yawning Floretta. “Why are you so tired? Are you hungry? Do you want me to make some pasta for you?”
“Sure. I want some pasta,” Floretta replied sleepily and smiled with her half-opened eyes.
“Come on in, then. You should join us, Mr. Golding,” Angeline invited. Content held by NôvelDrama.Org.
Before Evander could reply, she took Floretta’s hand and brought the little girl into her house.
She was extremely mindful of her walking speed, for fear that Evander would notice her guilt.
Once the three of them were inside, Angeline told them to make themselves at home before heading to the fridge in the kitchen and pulling out a pack of pasta.
As the water in the pot was being boiled, she put the pasta in. She gradually spaced out as she stared ahead. The past few days have been so busy that I forgot to settle the score with Joseline. However, considering the current situation, I think I should properly investigate Joseline’s motive first. According to the information Jonathan provided, it seems very likely that Azura disallowed me to meet with the child because of Joseline’s order. And my parents—
Pain and hatred surfaced in her eyes when she thought about that. If my parents’ deaths are really caused by Joseline, I’ll do whatever it takes to make her pay.
“Be careful! It’s boiling!” It was then that Evander’s voice interrupted her thoughts.
Shortly after that, pain shot up her arm. She staggered backward, snapping out of her trance.
Bubbles were spilling out of the pot as the water reached the boiling point. If she hadn’t dodged in time, her arm would’ve been burned.
Before she could react to the situation, the stove was turned off.
Angeline had no idea when Evander showed up next to her, though she could see the worry in his eyes as he stared at her.
“Are you hurt?” he asked.
“No. I was just thinking about something earlier, so I forgot about keeping an eye on the pot,” Angeline replied.
While she wasn’t hurt, she was pretty shaken by that little incident.
Evander’s expression darkened. His icy gaze met hers as he questioned, “Do you miss Jonathan that much?”
“We’re just normal friends.” She blinked innocently.
“He doesn’t seem as simple as his appearance suggests.” Rolling up his sleeve, Evander started helping her wash the vegetables. “Even if he’s a hacker, no ordinary person can conduct such a detailed investigation and find out about that information.”
Upon hearing that, Angeline looked away guiltily.
Naturally, she was aware of what Evander was trying to warn her.
Jonathan was a pretty mysterious figure whom she couldn’t fathom. However, since they were helping each other out, she decided to turn a blind eye to his identity and hidden agendas.
At that moment, she had a much more important mission to fulfill.
“I think you’ve misunderstood him, Mr. Golding. Jonathan’s just a normal employee in a small company. He might excel at computers, but his skills aren’t good enough to be showcased.” Angeline smiled and tried to ease the tension, all the while pretending everything was fine.
“You’re saying there’s nothing wrong with him?” Grabbing her arm, Evander pushed her backward and pinned her to the wall. His slender fingers held her chin as he continued, “If he’s not a problem, does this mean you are? Why are you investigating Golding Group? Why do you want to know what’s going on?”
His terrifying glare caused Angeline to gulp guiltily. I don’t blame him for being angry. I’m just an actress, after all. It’s only logical for him to be suspicious of me when I suddenly got involved in the deceitful battles in the world of business. I recall him misunderstanding me the first time I met him. He thought I approached him because I wanted to snatch the Sorelle family’s shares. It seems like he’s still suspicious of that matter. I need to dispel this notion of his.
Gritting her teeth, Angeline explained, “It’s not what you think. I have a personal grudge against Hanson, too.”
“Keep going.”
